Oil on canvas, dimensions 88 X 73 cm, framed 102 X 86 cm. Portrait of a magistrate. He is depicted half-length, seated at a table, holding a quill pen in his right hand. A barred window and law books are visible in the upper left corner. The man wears a dark suit and a wide white collar, in keeping with 17th-century fashion. The painting is framed in a later Salvator Rosa gold and green frame, of great beauty and fine workmanship, made of pure gold. Italian School, late 17th - early 18th century. The painting has been relined; no significant pictorial restoration is visible under Wood's lamp. A certificate of authenticity is provided.
