African Art - Ashanti Doll - Ghana - 39 cm

Ashanti doll, called "akwaba" (which means "welcome" in most "akan" ethnic groups) or "fertility". We find on this statuette the ovoid-shaped head, the most identifiable sign among ashanti dolls. The piece presents sculptural features of great finesse. Patina predominantly dark and shiny, deep and with nuances of thickness, lighter at the points of contact. Characteristic sculpture of the koumassi region, bastion of ashanti culture.
