Jugend style birch sofa, Sweden, 1910s

Birch frame with upholstered seat and backrest, geometric patterned fabric and pierced dark wood side details. Swedish production, 1910s. The figured birch structure gives this early 1900s Swedish sofa a strong material presence, enhanced by the broad wooden surfaces and the natural variation of the grain. Beneath the armrests, pierced dark wood inserts interrupt the lighter birch surfaces with a geometric motif, creating one of the sofa’s most distinctive decorative details. The slender legs lighten the structure, while the geometric patterned upholstery echoes its ornamental character. Restrained forms and stylized decoration place the sofa within Swedish Jugend, the Nordic interpretation of Art Nouveau, characterized in the early 20th century by a more measured and geometric language than the sinuous expressions found in continental Europe. Good condition. It may show signs of age. Please pay attention to the photographs. AG401
