Modernist oil on canvas by Belgian architect and artist Jozef Schellekens , Turnhout, 1958. Part of the generation that introduced modernism to the Kempen, Schellekens approached painting in close relation to his architectural practice. His paintings can be read as extensions of his architectural ideas, shaped by Bauhaus principles, geometric order and the influence of Oskar Schlemmer. Executed in oil on canvas, with an architectural composition built from simplified figures, strong vertical accents and a concentrated palette of deep blue, ochre, black and off-white. Signed lower right and dated 1958. Preserved in beautiful original condition and newly presented in a minimal floating wood frame. A rare example of post-war Belgian art connected directly to Belgium's modernist architectural heritage.
