Large antique silver-plated metal bowl in the shape of a scallop shell, probably from the first half of the 20th century. Hollow form with wide radiating ribs, scalloped edge, and an end adorned with relief decoration of scrolls, foliage, and shell motifs in the rococo style. The technique of repoussé metalwork allows for these reliefs to be created from a sheet of metal worked from the back, an ancient technique widely used in decorative arts and silverware. The shell shape and rococo repertoire draw on a decorative vocabulary that spread across Europe from the 18th century and was regularly reinterpreted in the 19th and 20th centuries. The surface shows areas of oxidation, variations in appearance, and signs of use that accentuate certain reliefs. Its large size allows for use as a fruit bowl, serving platter, catch-all, or decorative container. Its sculptural form and the surface of the silver-plated metal work particularly well with a more understated table, antique wood, glass, or handmade ceramics. In the absence of a hallmark or identifiable marking, no specific manufacturer can be attributed to this piece. Dimensions: height 35 cm; width 30 cm; depth 8 cm. Weight: 0.5 kg. Generally good antique condition, with oxidation, scratches, and signs of use. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
