J-j kohn bistro chair, austria, circa 1900. In 1849, jacob kohn founded the company, which initially specialized in timber. In 1867, he teamed up with his son josef kohn and steered the company towards furniture. The expiry of the thonet brothers' patent on the curved wood technique allows them to soon offer their own range of products. With branches in berlin, paris, london and hamburg, kohn became one of the leading furniture manufacturers in austria-hungary in 1882 and became one of thonet's main competitors.
