Sold as presented. Henri Rivière (1864-1951) was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He began his career with drawing and then moved to soft-ground etching, specifically aquatint, in 1882. At the same time, he started a career as a director and set designer in 1886 at the shadow theatre of the Chat Noir cabaret, enhancing performances with innovative colour backdrops. He then dedicated himself exclusively to painting and engraving, making a mark in the history of etching, printmaking, wood engraving, lithography, and watercolour (he painted around a thousand watercolours).
