A true jewel of Franco-Swiss glassmaking craftsmanship, Lalique has become one of the greatest names in glassmaking in France and around the world in the space of 136 years of existence. Created in 1888 by René Lalique (1860-1945), the Lalique house was first and foremost a jewelry house, its creator being an exceptional jeweler, after having trained in the Cartier high jewelry workshops, he became known for his luxury jewelry, particularly during the Art Nouveau period (1890-1910). It was truly in 1907 that René Lalique put glass & crystal at the center of his artistic and decorative creations. He made this material, at the time considered not very "noble", into works of art & collection, still prized today. The "Bacchantes" model that you see here is one of René Lalique's creations in 1927. Its name is a reference to the priestesses of Ancient Rome of the Roman God of wine & drunkenness, Bacchus. They were renowned for their frivolity, their nudity as well as their passion for party and music. The outline of the vase is a faithful representation of their reputation: a neo-classical inspired frieze in bas relief, of these naked women, happy and dancing forming a chain! Although not signed, this vase is attributed to Lalique, its dimensions, the quality of the crystal mold and the sound to the touch correspond entirely to a model that would be. The reason why it is not signed can be explained by the fact that some pieces after 1945 may have left the factory without a signature, for reasons of quality control or special series.
