The Italian postmodern design duo Afra and Tobia Scarpa were particularly interested in the technical and aesthetic possibilities of materials, a pursuit reflected in their creations. Afra and Tobia Scarpa are a renowned Italian design couple. Tobia was born in Venice in 1935 and is the son of Carlo Scarpa, the equally famous architect. Afra Bianchin was born in 1937 in Montebelluna. Their professional careers began in Murano in 1958, where they worked for Venini in the glass industry. In 1960, Afra and Tobia opened their own design studio. They collaborated with numerous manufacturers such as B&B Italia, Knoll, Cassina, and Flos. Their creations, always comfortable and with a modernist aesthetic, are crafted from a wide variety of materials. The couple readily embraced new technologies. In 1970, they won the Compasso d'Oro for their Soriana armchair, produced by Cassina. Among the designer couple's greatest successes are the Coronado and Erasmo sofas, and the Papillona floor lamp. Their creations are featured in major international museums.
