Date: late 19th century. This large decorative mirror has a pretty unique look! The very thick oak frame was carved by hand to form two slightly asymmetrical volutes giving the whole an oval shape. The inner part of the frame has laurel leaves carved at the bottom and top; these still have their gilding. The frame is formed by several pieces of oak that have been joined by dowels. This is a very heavy mirror, so it must be hung with suitable materials; hooks and wire are present. The mirror glass is in very good condition. It has some tarnish spots and is clearly old thick glass; I think it is a mirror of mercury. The back is made of wooden panels. Dating this mirror is not easy. The thick oak assembled by pegs, as well as the rustic look, suggests a very old date. Mercury mirrors with wood panels at the back were also the norm long before the mid-19th century. So it could be a very old mirror but the bay leaves, a neoclassical motif, evoke the 19th century. It is probably a provincial rustic mirror using ancient techniques, but made in the first half of the nineteenth century. State: Ok. The wood is old (=patina & signs of use). There is a small surface chip on the glass (see photo) and some tarnish marks. Dimensions: see photo.
