These cups are made of "cul-noir" earthenware, a porous red or ochre clay to which a tin-glazed glaze is applied, producing an opaque, waterproof white enamel. This earthenware was popular with the less affluent, while the more refined fine earthenware was intended for a wealthier clientele. However, given its utilitarian nature and a high breakage rate, this ceramic, originally much more common than fine earthenware, is now rarer.
