Original Sèvres crystal candlestick. Circa 1900. In excellent condition. "Given by the king to Madame de Pompadour", the royal glassworks settled in the grounds of her castle in Sèvres in 1762. It was quickly considered one of the best crystalworks in France. Passionate about art, the favorite of Louis XV was resolutely determined to dress the royal table with the most beautiful glasses, as perfect as those made by the Venetians. Under the direction of the Marquis de Marigny, brother of the Marquise de Pompadour, Sèvres crystal conquered a prestigious clientele throughout Europe. However, it was under the reign of Charles X that recognition of Sèvres crystal know-how exploded. In a century and a half, Sèvres crystal and its luxurious glasses have definitively conquered lovers of French tableware: the contemporary aesthetics of the pieces produced are combined with unparalleled crystal work. We particularly admire the production of opalines that will become the crown jewels. In 1878, Sèvres crystal took part in the Paris World's Fair by producing crystal pieces mounted in gold or vermeil.
