Louis XVI Commode Stamped François Ignace PAPST

Elegant exotic wood chest of drawers with white marble top. Under the marble top, we find the stamp of the cabinetmaker françois ignace papst, master in 1785.18th century furniture, louis XVI period and style. Dimensions (height/width/depth): 85 X 130 X 55 cm shape: straight piece of furniture with fluted uprights and resting on 4 tapered legs. Openings: opening with 3 drawers. Ornamentation: pull handles in gilded bronze, solid disc keyholes. Marble: white veined marble top. Marquetry: exotic wood veneer >> stamped françois ignace papst (1785) originally from germany, francois-ignace papst became a master cabinetmaker on september 3, 1785, in paris. He first set up on rue de charonne, then finally moved his workshop to the faubourg saint antoine. Regularly receiving orders from the garde meuble de la couronne, he supplied numerous pieces of furniture to decorate the castles of fontainebleau, versailles, compiègne and rambouillet. He used rosewood and violet wood but the vast majority of his works are made of mahogany (chests of drawers, secretaries, consoles, game tables, etc.) and are rigorously designed and decorated with sober moldings. For around forty years, despite troubled times, he retained the esteem of all the governments that succeeded one another in france. He also participated with honor in the exhibitions of 1806 and 1809, then received a medal in 1811 from the society for the encouragement of national industry. In 1822, the parisian bazaar cited him as an “excellent cabinetmaker working especially for the royal factories and the furnishings of his majesty’s palaces”. His name appears in the commerce almanac until 1825.
