Side table "Shuffle MH1", Mia Hamborg for &Tradition, lacquered wood, 2010 – Denmark

Original side table, adaptable or modular, designed by Mia Hamborg for &Tradition, named "Shuffle MH1". Signed at the base. Its design is distinguished by a sculptural language where each piece can be moved and combined in various ways, allowing for adjustments in both height and appearance. By varying the order of the coloured elements, it becomes a dynamic and very personal piece of furniture. The central stem is made of stained solid wood, while the rest of the components receive meticulous high-quality lacquering with a polyurethane (PU) coating, offering a sophisticated and durable glossy finish. For its creation, the designer drew inspiration from the classic wooden toys of her childhood, notably the iconic stacking clown from Brio. Mia Hamborg is a renowned Norwegian designer, born in 1980, recognised in the furniture world for her ability to infuse humour, joy, and dynamism into everyday objects. She studied at the prestigious Steneby School of Crafts and Design in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she obtained her degree in furniture design with a specialisation in woodworking. Her work is characterised by the revival of the old Nordic tradition of wood turning (a technique with roots dating back to the Viking era). By applying bright colours and modern lacquered finishes, she manages to reinterpret and breathe new life into this traditional craft.
