Neoclassical cast iron and eglomisé glass coffee table from the 1940s. France. Neoclassical coffee table, circa 1940: a patinated cast iron base resting on three small decorative brass feet, supporting a round eglomisé glass top. The underside, worked with a reverse technique, features a gilded decoration of scrolls and fillets, with a superb clouded patina. Eglomisé — a technique of gilding/painting applied to the back of the glass — saw a significant rise in popularity during the interwar period, favoured by French decorators for its precious reflections (in the style of Jansen or Baguès). The piece combines architectural sobriety with decorative brilliance, a hallmark of neoclassicism from the 30s to 40s. A stable, heavy, and elegant piece, ideal for a living room or entrance hall.
