Pair of elegant antique ironstone plates, signed Longchamp – CF & Cie (stamp used circa 1880–1900, Fauconnet & Cie period). They are distinguished by their rare naturalistic floral decoration in navy blue, composed of delicately intertwined foliage and flowers. A very fine, unusual motif reminiscent of botanical engravings from the end of the 19th century. Printed stamp “CF & Cie – Longchamp” + intaglio marking “Terre de Fer”: CF & Cie for Céramiques de Longchamp – Fauconnet & Cie. The Fauconnet family ran the factory several times in the 19th century; this type of mark (with the abbreviation & Cie and a curved cartouche) is mainly found towards the end circa 1880–1900, a period when Longchamp produced many naturalistic and floral services, particularly in ironstone. Diameter 21 cm Very good overall condition for their age, some slight signs of use which contribute to their charm (see photos). Note that the decoration is not quite the same on each of the two plates: on the naturalist services of the late 19th century, especially in iron earth, it was common for the decoration to vary slightly from one plate to another while remaining in the same theme (flowers, foliage, birds, insects, etc.) because the manufacturers used multiple transfers (several engraved copper plates) combined and sometimes enhanced by hand. This gave the services a lively appearance, like a botanical walk.
