Splendid Organic Stoneware Vase – Signed Gaston Thirot

This remarkable low vase made of art stoneware is an authentic studio piece from Bouffioulx, a historic centre of excellence for ceramics in Belgium. Underneath, the object features superb traceability entirely hand-engraved in the raw clay: the location, the signature of the artisan Gaston Thirot, as well as the year. In terms of design, this piece adopts a flattened lenticular silhouette emblematic of the Modernist and Mid-Century Modern aesthetic of the 1950s. Breaking away from classicism, its pebble or flattened top shape is inspired by the biomorphic repertoire, beautifully highlighted by two small side handles in rolled volutes known as "ears." Its decoration expresses the mastery of the fire arts from this Walloon school, revealing a powerful flamed glazing with expressive dark and striped patterns that dynamically contrast with a yellow ochre background. With its sculptural lines and raw material, this vase perfectly fits into minimalist or contemporary interiors. A unique collector's piece.
