Sleek, elegant, and collectible, this coffee table is a creation by Gianfranco Frattini for Cassina from the 1970s, part of the famous family of nesting tables that are among the most sought after in Italian production of that decade. Its structure, made of lacquered beech in an anthracite grey with bluish reflections, features wide legs and carefully rounded corners, supporting a framed smoked glass top. This particular shade, between black and blue-grey, gives it a depth and elegance that classic black versions lack. Gianfranco Frattini is one of the great figures of post-war transalpine design, graduating in architecture in Milan in 1953, and collaborating with Gio Ponti and the leading Italian publishing houses such as Cassina, Knoll, and Artemide. His tables for Cassina are now part of the permanent collections at MoMA in New York and the Cooper Hewitt in Washington, and they are regularly traded on major platforms like 1stDibs or Pamono. In a contemporary space age or mid-century living room, it asserts itself with total discretion and undeniable character. Note that there are some signs of wear due to age, and a few more noticeable marks visible in the photos, but it remains in good overall condition for its age. Some paint chips are present.
