The Beni Ouarain rug is undoubtedly the most well-known of the Berber rugs. It is characterised by its thick wool in ecru tones and its geometric diamond-shaped patterns, often in black or brown. However, there are now versions with bright coloured patterns. Originally, the Beni Ouarain rug is also characterised by its very large size. Indeed, the Beni Ouarain tribe comes from the Middle Atlas, so it is subjected to a harsh climate. The rugs were used as mattresses and blankets; people would wrap themselves in them to sleep and protect themselves from the cold. The Berber Beni Ouarain rug is made artisanally, by hand on a loom. The wool threads are tied one after the other, which requires a very long production time, ranging from several days to several months depending on its size.
