Industrial drawing table chair by friso kramer for ahrend, ca 1960. Rare industrial drawing table chair designed by friso kramer for ahrend de cirkel in the 1960s. The chair is marked on the gray screw cap, with arhend. The frame is made of iron and the seat and back are made of birch wood. The seat and back have a nice patina, the chair is in very good condition; normal signs of wear from use (see photos). The foundation for the chair's success was laid in the 1950s. In that decade, friso kramer (1922), belonging to the first generation of industrial designers, released his first series of so-called 'drawing table chairs'. In the light of the reconstruction, only one thing mattered to kramer and that was the function of an object. Given the star status that many designers aspire to nowadays, it is surprising that kramer thought it nonsense at the time if a designer wanted to reflect his personality in an object. For kramer, an object had to be as user-friendly, simple and cheap as possible. Above all, he wanted his chairs to last for decades. The fact that some 60 years later this rock-solid design continues to decorate many living and study rooms shows that kramer has more than achieved his goals.
