Rare and spectacular chandelier, cascading Granada suspensions by Julius Theodor Kalmar for Kalmar Franken KG. Austria, 1960s. Base in black lacquered metal and chrome brass. Suspended, three magnificent frosted Murano glass blocks, held by chrome brass pieces. Independently adjustable in height, they can be arranged aligned or in a cascade. Max 100 cm. Julius Theodor Kalmar was born in 1884 in Vienna. He is the son of Julius August Kalmar, the founder of the eponymous brand specialising in chandeliers and other bronze objects. Julius Theodor Kalmar enriched his design expertise during his training years. He studied at the Birmingham School of Art as well as at Vienna’s University of Applied Arts under the tutelage of the Viennese Secession architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956). JT Kalmar joined his father's company in 1906, eventually taking it over in 1913. As a fervent advocate of the Arts & Crafts movement, he steered the company away from the eclecticism of the late 19th century. The aesthetic of Julius Theodor Kalmar's design is characterised by the integration of forms and functions, blending classical tradition with forward-looking innovation. In the mid-1920s, his designs dominated the important avant-garde furniture store Haus & Garten, founded by major architects Josef Frank (1885-1967) and Oskar Wlach (1881-1963). In the 1930s, Julius Theodor Kalmar began collaborating with the Austrian Werkbund, an association founded by architects, manufacturers, and craftsmen united by modernist design principles. For the Werkbund, Julius Theodor Kalmar created a series of glass chandeliers and fixtures that showcase meticulous construction and craftsmanship.
