René gabriel was born in france in 1899. He studied at the ecole nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs. In 1919, he presented his first creations at the salon d'automne. He then participated in the realization of the french embassy presented during the international exhibition of modern decorative and industrial arts. In 1927, he began his research on the creation of series furniture and proposed furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. In 1944, the ministry of reconstruction and urban planning entrusted him with the responsibility of creating emergency furniture. Subsequently, he was appointed president of the society of decorative artists. In tribute to its major role in design, the salon des arts ménagers created the famous rené gabriel prize.
