Important Afghan architectural door made of cedar wood, richly carved. Repeated geometric decoration: diamonds, hatching, scales, knife-cut friezes. Afghan work, late 19th century. The door is mounted in its original frame. No metal fittings: the traditional rotation system using wooden tenons and axes is preserved. Each leaf is mounted on wooden hinges, pivoting on a cylindrical dowel that engages at the top in its housing in the frame and, at the bottom, in the crossbar. The large beam forming the base on the ground serves only as a support piece: the frame is simply fitted into two mortises, and the lower pivots of the leaves fit into two holes. This base can be easily removed, replaced, or reinstalled. Dimensions: • Total frame width: 155–160 cm. • Total height: 225 cm. • Usable opening: W108 × H156 cm. • Depth: 33 cm (variable from 33 to 20 cm depending on the type of base used) Superb patina. Stable ensemble, entirely functional and very decorative. A piece of character, ideal as an architectural element, decorative door, or for a cupboard or bathroom. Purchased at auction in 1980 and installed since in a famous 5-star hotel in the French Alps.
