Rare set of 4 "Hongisto" chairs in solid pine, attributed to Ilmari Tapiovaara for the Finnish manufacturer Laukaan Puu, circa 1960. An icon of Scandinavian furniture, this model was designed for a boarding school, hence its structure which is at once sober, robust and functional. The lines are clean, the seat wide, the wood naturally patinated. The minimalist design typical of Tapiovaara's work gives these chairs a character which is both utilitarian and sculptural, highly sought after in vintage decoration. Dimensions (per chair): H 75 cm × W 44 cm × D 42 cm, seat at 43 cm. Good original condition: sound wood, traces of use visible on the seats and varnish, without altering the solidity or aesthetics. Authentic patina. Provenance: Les Contamines-Montjoie (74170) Model referenced on 1stDibs, Pamono or Formes Utiles. Estimated value between €800 and €1,600 depending on condition.
