Art Deco fruit bowl, pressed glass, Niemen Glassworks, Poland, 1930s

A fruit bowl made of pressed glass, produced in the 1930s by the Niemen Glassworks in Poland, is an example of solid craftsmanship from the interwar period. The vessel is made of completely transparent, cool glass, without any colour admixture. The edge of the bowl is subtly wavy, giving it a dynamic line, and the sides are decorated with geometric, star-shaped ornaments typical of the Art Deco style. The bottom of the vessel is finished with an accentuated, embossed composition of leaves and fruits, which serves both decorative and functional purposes. The thick walls and solid mass of glass hold the form well, and the whole has survived without cracks or losses – only minor, surface signs of use consistent with age are visible.
