I am offering an authentic oil on canvas in perfect condition signed Léopold LECOMTE (1890-1963), a referenced Belgian artist, recognized by his peers as "the painter of serenity and melancholy". This post-impressionist work with an almost semi-abstract orientation represents a wooded and imaginary landscape fleeing the world of reality. This spectacle of nature, elaborated with touches and colored spots, exudes a great freedom of expression in a lyricism freed from all classical and academic servitude. The foreground is a meditation on a body of water with the reflections of terrestrial nature and water lilies in homage to Claude MONET and his water lily pond in Giverny. In the background, paths wind through a paradise of nature giving depth and a distant perspective towards a sky of hope and future. Thus, 4 heavenly elements are represented here: water, air, earth and sky. This oil on canvas of surprising poetic curiosity dated 1946 is in perfect harmony with its non-academic era when the public was looking for bold originality in order to escape the terrible war years it had just experienced. It is necessary to take the time to contemplate this work in order to let its own imagination flourish. Dimensions of the frame: 68.5 cm X 57.5 cm. Dimensions of the work: 60.5 cm X 49.5 cm. With a careful harmony in a festival of variegated colors, this work which respects the rule of Thirds announces the coming style of lyrical abstraction of the 1950s. Léopold LECOMTE uses a mixed technique first with a brush for a lean pictorial material, then with a knife for a thicker oily material. This canvas which is almost 80 years old may have been restored since but no restoration seems visible. It was recently cleaned by a professional and then a Winsor and Newton UV-protective satin varnish was applied.
