Hello. I am offering a superb watercolor in perfect condition representing two unfinished towers of the abbey church of Saint-Jean d'Angely in Charente-Maritime. With its two bell towers surmounting an immense facade, these two classically designed towers are adjacent to the royal abbey. Unmissable and emblematic of the city of Angérienne, the royal abbey was founded in the 9th century by Pepin of Aquitaine, grandson of Charlemagne, in order to house the relic of the skull of Saint-Jean the Baptist. Built by the Benedictine monks of Saint-Maur, adjoining the buildings of the royal abbey, the construction of this two-towered abbey church began in 1741 according to a project by the architect François Franque. Destroyed several times, notably by the Vikings and then during the Hundred Years' War, it was rebuilt and renovated each time to preserve its classical architecture. However, the work will stop due to lack of financial means, then the French Revolution will put a definitive end to the monastic presence in the city. This authentic work is signed messenger with beautiful calligraphy, in-depth research is to be done on this artist. Frame dimensions: 38 cm X 46 cm. Watercolor dimensions: 22 cm X 32 cm. This watercolor on thick paper is in perfect condition. It has been cleaned then a satin varnish has been added by a professional. An oak frame from the same period has been restored then resized. An aging varnish has been applied with gilding on the rebate. The whole in perfect condition for its age is ready to be hung.
