Rare mid-century Aster side chair designed by Augusto Bozzi for Saporiti Italia, Italy, circa 1950s. A beautifully sculptural example of Italian Mid-Century Modern design, characterized by its elegantly curved, enveloping seat shell and exceptionally light, architectural metal base. The chair is upholstered in its original-looking warm cream/off-white vinyl, with subtle button detailing across the transition between the backrest and seat. The upholstery has acquired a softly aged patina consistent with its vintage character. The seat is supported by a slender black lacquered metal frame, distinguished by its geometric cross-bracing and four original brass-tipped feet. The combination of the organic upholstered shell, graphic metal construction and brass details is highly characteristic of Augusto Bozzi’s refined post-war Italian furniture designs. The Aster was designed by Augusto Bozzi (1924–1982) for Saporiti Italia in the mid-1950s. Bozzi’s collaboration with Saporiti began around 1950 and produced some of the most distinctive Italian seating designs of the period. This chair is particularly appealing as a side chair, dining chair, desk chair or occasional chair, and its relatively compact proportions make it easy to incorporate into both contemporary and Mid-Century interiors.
