Scandinavian Modern Brass Candlesticks by Gunnar Ander for Ystad Metall

Elegant and rare pair of Mid-Century Modern Scandinavian brass candlesticks designed by Gunnar Ander for Ystad Metall, Sweden, in the 1950s. The candlesticks have a particularly refined and sculptural form, with tall, slender stems rising from square brass bases with rounded feet and a finely articulated rope-like border. The upper candle cups are formed as shallow hemispherical bowls, giving the pieces a beautiful balance between geometric structure and soft, organic curves. The polished brass has developed a warm vintage patina that enhances their understated character. Both candlesticks are original and individually marked on the underside with the Ystad Metall maker's mark, as shown in the photographs. At approximately 26 cm (10.25 in) high and 10 cm (3.94 in) wide at the base, they are well proportioned for a console, mantel, sideboard or dining table. Their relatively compact footprint makes them particularly versatile. About Gunnar Ander Gunnar Ander (1908–1976) was a Swedish architect and designer whose work was an important part of the development of Swedish decorative arts during the post-war period. He worked across several materials, including brass, wrought iron, glass, and silver, and is particularly known for his elegant candleholders and decorative metalwork. He also had a long and important association with Lindshammars Glasbruk, where he developed both art and functional glass and created numerous new glass colors. Ander began working with Ystad Metall in the late 1940s or early 1950s, and his collaboration with the company continued for many years. His brass candleholders became among the firm's most recognizable designs and are now particularly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian Modern design. Ystad Metall was one of Sweden's notable producers of decorative metalwork during this period, and Ander was one of its principal designers.
