The Massiers (Jérôme, Clément, Delphin, Cédric) are a dynasty of ceramists that dates back beyond the French Revolution and who played a key role in the revival of Vallauris ceramics. Clément was introduced to pottery by Gaetano Gandolfi, an Italian master ceramist hired by his father. Gandolfi would be the initiator of several techniques, including glazed earthenware, which would make the Massier house famous. In 1887, he became the official purveyor to the English crown. Clément also worked with renowned artists such as Scottish sculptor Alexandre Munroe, ceramist Félix Optat Milet, who trained at Sèvres, sculptor James Vibert, painter Jules Scalbert, and, most notably, Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer. After his death, Clément Massier's business was taken over by his daughters, who reissued their father's works.
