The end of the 1930s placed French decorative arts in a deep and tacit tension. As the political horizon darkened over Europe—the Spanish Civil War, the annexation of Austria, the Munich Agreements—the great Parisian houses continued to produce objects of extraordinary refinement in the traditions that had made French civilization synonymous with the art of living. Maison Jansen, founded in 1880 and present on four continents, was among the most committed practitioners of this continuity. Their neoclassicism was not an antiquarian nostalgia but a deliberate cultural assertion: an insistence that the tradition of the well-ordered and beautifully furnished interior would persist, whatever history might bring next. This brass magazine rack, in the register of fluted and classical columns that Jansen perfected throughout the interwar period, belongs to this assertion. The neoclassical vocabulary—references to the urn, the column, the architectural moulding—places the object in a cultural transmission chain extending from ancient Rome through the Louis XVI period and the Empire, to the uncertain present. The brass, the democratic gold of the bourgeois interior, imparts to the classical forms their usual warmth and familiar authority.
