This illustration adopts the naturalistic style of botanical plates from the 18th to early 19th centuries, characterised by a precise and isolated representation of the plant. The drawing, with great scientific rigour, is balanced by an elegant and decorative composition, highlighting leaves, flowers, and stems in their various states. It reproduces sober and nuanced colours, close to watercolour, with a concern for readability, also in herbalism. This plate, dating from the mid-20th century, served as medicinal advertising with the advertisement on the back. The illustration depicts two species of pepper plants with their complete root systems. On the left, the Piper Indicum orbiculatum Medium features small round red-orange fruits and small blue flowers. On the right, the Piper Indicum rotundum aculeatum is distinguished by its larger elongated fruits and broader leaves.
