Chair No. 22 by Chevallier in Fiume around 1890, not Thonet.

We owned two chairs of this model, here is now the second and last one. Chair No. 22, by Fiume-Chevallier, circa 1885/90. The No. 22 from Thonet, which served as the model for this "Fiume," is difficult to acquire as it was produced in limited quantities: only 2,958 copies in 1885 (No. 4 had 5,582, No. 16 had 693, No. 14 had 341,968). Only Fischel produced a No. 22 that can be found in catalogues (see attachment). From time to time, chairs stamped "FIUME" or "Charles Chevallier" or "CHEVALLIER" can be found in Europe, sometimes with a label or a stamp mentioning "MOEBEL FABRIK- LANDESBANK." All these pieces presumably come from the same manufacturer located in Fiume, which is the former name of Rijeka, a city on the Adriatic in present-day Croatia. Fiume, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was an important port for exports as it was the only maritime access for Austria. The strategic port position of Fiume on the Adriatic and Mediterranean had already been considered by Napoleon; the District of Fiume in civil Croatia was under French administration from 1810 to 1813, which could explain the use of a very French commercial name (Charles Chevallier) some time later. The fine caning is recent, of the Feingeflecht type, and the chair is in stable and solid original condition. Total height: 90 cm - seat height: 46.5 cm - seat: 41 x 44 cm.
