Superb Lhote apparatus for Seltzer water in porcelain, made in Paris at the end of the 19th century, stamped, complete and in perfect condition. In two parts, separated by a vertical partition and two openings closed with stoppers, it was used to produce mineral Seltzer water. Since the 16th century, these waters, rich in bicarbonate of soda and salt, and naturally carbonated, have been recognised for their therapeutic, digestive, and diuretic properties. However, they quickly lose part of their gaseous properties once exposed to air! Designed for domestic use, the Lhote apparatus allowed for the artificial preparation of this water by adding the salts contained in Seltzer water to ordinary water. The mixture then produced temporarily sparkling water from the spout. This system fell into disuse in the 20th century with the advent of the Seltzer water siphon.
