Earthenware jug from Quimper decorated with a profile portrait of a Breton woman, an emblematic iconography of Breton ceramic tradition. The scene is set within a medallion surrounded by floral friezes and very graphic geometric patterns blending cobalt blue, orange ochre, yellow, and reddish-brown, a vibrant palette characteristic of regionalist productions from the early 20th century. The design of the character, deliberately simple and expressive, fits within the decorative aesthetic developed in Quimper during the interwar period, when manufacturers celebrated popular Breton themes. The piece bears the handwritten inscription "Henriot Quimper 139, " an interesting detail: the signature is placed under the handle rather than under the base, an uncommon arrangement that reflects a still very artisanal production. Several stylistic and technical elements allow us to date this jug to around 1925-1935: handwritten signature associated with a decor number, hand-painted decoration with free strokes, upper rim in the characteristic speckled blue of early 20th-century productions, and a turned base revealing the unglazed beige clay. Presence of the number 3 inlaid under the base. In good vintage condition, with fine natural crazing of the glaze and chips on the rim (see photos). Height 14 cm, width at the spout handle 14 cm, base diameter 6 cm, widest diameter of the container 10 cm. Capacity approximately 75 cl. Authentic and full of character, perfect for enriching a collection of Breton earthenware or adding a touch of history to a kitchen or dining table.
