Boat-shaped dining table by Grete Jalk for Glostrup

The boat-shaped top features exceptional grain. Description: Grete Juel Jalk was a Danish furniture designer, cabinetmaker, and co-editor of the Danish magazine Mobilia. Grete Jalk began her career at the School of Applied Arts for Women (Kunstindustriskolen for Kvinder) and later trained in cabinetmaking. From 1946, she studied at the Danish School of Design (Danmarks Designskole) and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, under the guidance of Kaare Klint. Inspired by the laminated and curved plywood models of Alvar Aalto and Charles Eames, Grete Jalk opened her own studio in 1953. She created furniture for renowned manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, Poul Jeppesen, Glostrup, and France & Søn. Her anthropometric and minimalist designs quickly gained international acclaim. The She chair, designed in 1963, was included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York the same year. In the 1970s, Grete Jalk worked for the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for which she organised a travelling exhibition on Danish design. In 1990, she received the Statens Kunstfonds (National Arts Fund) award. After Jack's death in 2006, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen established the Grete Jalk scholarship for promising young furniture design students.
