This table lamp is a highly representative example of French modernist design, utilising plant fibres in the mid-20th century. The structural scheme rests on a hexagonal base formed by juxtaposed rattan rods, topped with a central cylindrical shaft highlighted by rattan core bindings. The remarkable element of this piece lies in its original lampshade, designed in double thickness: an internal diffuser cylinder made of stretched fabric, encased by an external openwork structure composed of diagonally crossed rattan strands. This rigorous design offers a light diffusion that is both warm and structured. The geometric and innovative treatment of rattan allows this creation to be formally attributed to Louis Sognot. A key figure in French decorative arts and a founding member of the Union of Modern Artists (UAM), Sognot distinguished himself in the 1950s by his desire to elevate rattan. Moving away from traditional rustic garden furniture, he imposed this material in the bourgeois interiors of the reconstruction era. His work combines the lightness of organic material with the rigour of modernist design, becoming the perfect embodiment of the post-war French Riviera style.
