Makio Hasuike coat rack for Gedy, Italy, 1970
Special freestanding coat rack, designed by Japanese industrial designer Makio Hasuike for the Italian design label Gedy in the 1970s. A characteristic example of Italian Space Age design, where functionality and a clear, sculptural design come together. The coat rack is made of cream-coloured plastic and consists of a slender vertical stand on a round base. The various horizontal arms are placed at multiple heights, giving the design a playful, almost abstract silhouette. The rounded ends and smooth transitions provide a soft, minimalist look. The longer arms can be rotated individually, making the coat rack flexible in use. In addition to being used as a coat rack, the design is also suitable as a clothes stand or towel rack. The combination of simple geometry, light material, and thoughtful functionality is typical of Italian industrial design from this period. The coat rack is in very good vintage condition, with only minimal signs of use appropriate to its age.
