Philips - Louis Kalff - Ufo desk lamp

This vintage modernist lamp is a design by louis kalff for philips holland and is often referred to as "ufo lamp" because of its shape. In overall perfect condition. No dents or visible scratches. The black shade and base and the copper-coloured flexible neck, which allows the shade to bent in all directions, make this a stylish and practical desk lamp. Period: 1950s. Style: mid century, modern. Dimensions: h 46 cm, shade ø 28 cm, base 14 cm. E27 lightbulb not included. Louis christiaan kalff was born in 1897 amsterdam where he also studied applied arts, furniture design & architecture at the rietveld academy. At the age of 27 kalff wrote a letter to anton philips, the president of philips & co., stating that he felt the company's advertising could be improved. Shortly after he was hired and a year later he became in charge of the commercial and artistic propaganda departments. With his designs for posters and packaging, kalff rapidly modernized the image of philips. Five year later he started a new department for light consultancy and became responsible for the lighting of the world exhibitions in barcelona, (and later also antwerp, brussels and paris). Besides the philips logo he also designed other famous advertising posters (calvé, ptt, holland radio, …), book covers, desklamps and even a few buildings. After world war II he became art director at philips and worked together with le corbusier and the componist edgar varèse. After his retirement in 1960 he stayed active as advisor for philips and was involved in the execution of the evoluon building in eindhoven. The shape of this building can be recognized in many lamps he designed. Louis kalff past away in 1976. An iconic and timeless louis kalff designer desk lamp that looks great in every interior.
