Description
Pair of English porcelain Staffordshire dogs between 1920 and 1950. These porcelain dogs had a special meaning... The figurines with which the English bourgeois decorated their homes in the 19th century were also "prostitute's dogs". Among the prudish Queen Victoria, prostitutes could only offer their services in secret by selling figurines. Their bodies were included in the transaction. The figurines were also behind the windows of their houses. If the dog pointed its muzzle inward, then the lady had a customer. If the muzzle was pointed outward, you could go inside. "according to legend" it was also a decorative object often placed on the fireplace. Good condition except wear from use and time (see photos) Dim: h: 23.5 cm l: 19 cm l: 12 cm.
