Description
Helena tynell designed these amber vases around 1960 for the finnish glassworks riihimäki. They were given the name pala. The lot consists of an amber vase and one in light blue. Excellent condition, barely used with minimal signs of wear. Helena tynell was a famous finnish glass designer who has been described as a pioneer of finnish glass art. Tynell began his career in 1943 as a designer for arabia, one of finland's leading manufacturers of household goods and ceramics. At the same time, she also worked for taito, a design office partly owned by her future husband and fellow designer, paavo tynell. In 1946, having decided to focus exclusively on glass, tynell left arabia to join a major finnish glass manufacturer of the time, riihimäki glass, where she remained for most of her career and created several of her most notable creations. Finally, in 1976, she moved to germany, drawing for glashütte limburg, among others, until her retirement in the early 1990s. Tynell is best known for his practical designs, created on purpose for large-scale manufacturing and everyday use. However, she herself was more interested in glass carving, experimenting with abstract forms and other artistic activities, using both molding and blowing as well as other techniques.
