Mascaron

Pair of Mascarons or "Grotesque Mask", finished in gold paint, directly inspired by the Baroque style or Italian Renaissance, typical of the Neo-Baroque or Napoleonic III style. It is a style that seeks to impress with its relief and brilliance. This is an object with a lot of character, ideal for theatrical decoration or a cabinet of curiosities. Such pieces were highly sought after in the 19th century and in the 1970s/80s to decorate mantelpieces, libraries, or mirror overmantels. The Green Man. This is not just a simple human face. It is a hybrid figure: • The features: Notice the very pronounced eyebrows, almost horn-like, and a flattened nose. This is typical of representations of Satyrs or deities related to nature (like Pan or Bacchus). • The foliage: The face seems to "emerge" from acanthus or vine leaves. In the history of art, this often symbolises the cycle of life, rebirth, or the protection of the home. • The open mouth: Historically, mascarons with open mouths served as fountain spouts (to let water flow) or door knockers. Here, it is purely decorative, but it retains that theatrical and imposing aspect.
