Roman goddess fortuna / fortune holding a horn of plenty 19th century. Italian work. In single-piece wood neoclassical - wood, oak - 19th century dimensions height 34.5 cm, width 9 cm, depth 9 cm, weight 1 kilo. This oak wood statuette is a rare rendering of the roman goddess fortuna / fortune. She is dressed in a dress / toga and carries a large basket of fruit which is placed on her shoulder. This basket is a horn of plenty. The horn pours out its fruits. It is therefore a lucky charm, an object to attract luck. The horn of plenty (cornucopia in latin) is a decorative motif representing a horn whose opening is filled with fruits, flowers and sometimes objects of all kinds. It is the attribute of fortune and abundance. The statuette is in good general condition, no traces of woodworms. Unsigned. This statue was mounted as a lamp base. The lampshade is not included. For those passionate about mythology, fortuna, or fortune (fortuna, ae in latin), is an italic allegorical deity of luck. Her name comes from the latin "fors" which means "fate". She is identified with the greek tyche and was perhaps originally "bearer of fertility" (from the latin "ferre", to carry, to bring). Fortuna represents destiny with all its unknowns. Her name comes from "ferre" (to carry, to bring). Since ancient times, she was venerated in several italic provinces, but her most important cult was celebrated in praeneste in latium, where a certain numerius suffustus, while digging a rock, had discovered "sortes" (tablets) made of oak, on which were inscribed mysterious formulas that were used to render oracles. The cornucopia (latin cornucopia) is a mythological object in the shape of a ruminant's horn or a triton's shell used by pluto, the roman god of wealth and abundance. 1 it is most often depicted overflowing with fruit, but also with milk.
