This very beautiful and large bowl, likely a fruit bowl or a catch-all, has been carved from a rot-resistant wood with a lovely grain, known as Monkey Pod Wood, or Suar wood. The stamp underneath also indicates that it has been kiln-dried; the last part of this marking is difficult to decipher, but it seems to indicate the origin of the item: Philippines. This bowl has a very nice shape, elegant, fluid, and rounded, reminiscent of Scandinavian style. This piece, the result of fine craftsmanship, will make a magnificent centrepiece. It is difficult to date without further information, but items with this design and in this wood are often dated from the 1950s to the 1970s. I have cleaned it and then polished it with paraffin oil (available at pharmacies, safe for food contact), and it is advisable to do this from time to time to maintain the lovely shine of this wood. This bowl is in generally good condition, with no cracks, chips, or dents, but it does show some marks that testify to its age and use: scratches and abrasions mainly located under the base and a few small stains, whether original or not, inside the bowl. This bowl measures 45 cm in length, 28 cm in width, and 9 cm in height.
