An exceptionally large hand-woven rug with a distinctive geometric design in soft yellow, greyed blue, light turquoise and muted coral red. The repeating narrow stripes are interrupted by a large, calm field of colour in the centre, making the rug graphic without being busy. The rug is a flat-woven piece. The visible structure, small irregularities in the weave and the hand-finished fringes point to artisanal production. The material appears to be wool, possibly combined with cotton warps. In design it recalls the graphic flatweaves of the 1970s and 1980s, with influences from both Scandinavian modernism and hand-woven kilims and dhurries from South Asia. Without a label or signature, the exact origin cannot be established with certainty. The rug comes from a carefully furnished home with quality objects collected by the previous owner on travels abroad: not a souvenir item, but a solid and characterful hand-woven interior piece. Lovely in a light modernist interior, but equally strong with rough lime walls, natural stone, old wood, a minimalist sofa or simple vintage furniture. Good vintage condition with normal signs of use. A few small scattered holes, probably from old moth damage; not disturbing overall.
