Elegant decorative work by Nick Orsborn (born 1948), a British artist known for his bright, poetic universe deeply connected to watercolour. Titled Quartet, this composition depicts four musicians gathered in a scene full of movement: violins, cello, elongated silhouettes, and transparent colours intertwine in an atmosphere that is both musical, theatrical, and joyfully sophisticated. The soft palette—blue, green, pink, yellow, and red—as well as the effects of transparency directly recall the language of watercolour that characterises Nick Orsborn's work. The artist himself explains that he seeks in this medium a balance between freedom of expression and mastery, favouring an optimistic and bright vision of life. A particularly interesting detail appears in the lower left part of the composition: a small mark accompanied by the number “86”, most likely referring to 1986, which situates the work at the heart of British graphic production in the 1980s. Nick Orsborn was born in London in 1948. He studied fine arts at Kingston College of Art and Reigate School of Art between 1966 and 1970, before settling in Brighton. In 2007, he was elected a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours (RI), a historic British institution dedicated to the excellence of watercolour. During the 1980s, several creations by Nick Orsborn were also published in England as hand-made art screen prints, notably by King Posters. Quartet fully fits within this aesthetic period. In the absence of a visible publisher's indication on this copy, it is preferable to present it simply as a vintage art print after a work by Nick Orsborn, rather than definitively attributing a specific edition.
