Mustache cup. Rouen earthenware from masse frères. Hand painted, in perfect condition, vibrant colors. A bit of history: Invented in the 1860s by british potter harvey adams. Whiskers bloomed throughout the victorian era. In fact, from 1860 to 1916, the british army required all its soldiers to wear a mustache for the authority it conferred on the mustachioed man. Often, mustache wax was applied to the mustache to keep it stiff, with all the hairs in place. When drinking hot liquids, the steam of the drink melts the wax which then drips into the cup. Sipping hot tea or coffee also often stains the whiskers... Size: Saucer = diameter = 16.5cm. Cup = diameter = 10.5cm / height = 6.7cm.
