Large earthenware plate from the Gien factory, Rambouillet model. Designed by Jean Bertholle in 1955 at the request of the then President of the Republic, René Coty, to equip the prestigious residences hosting presidential hunts. Animal-themed decoration, hand-painted in very lovely shades of green and chocolate. No defects to report. This model is still produced and sold by the Gien factory - price: €320 for the 26 cm plate. In 1943, he became the artistic director of the Gien earthenware factory (2,000 workers) where he served as a decorator. In 1957, he left his position at the Gien factory to fully dedicate himself to painting. In 1983, Jean Bertholle was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux Arts. The Gien factory: The Gien earthenware factory was established in 1821 in Gien in the Loire Valley by the Englishman Thomas Hall.
