Pierre Paulin for Artifort Big Tulip armchair - fully restored

The Big Tulip armchair, designed by Pierre Paulin for Artifort in the early 1960s, is one of the most expressive designs from the post-war design period. With its sculptural shape and inviting seating comfort, this armchair radically broke with the traditional furniture image of the time. French designer Pierre Paulin was known for his innovative vision on seating furniture: chairs should not only be functional, but also embrace the body and have an almost architectural presence in the interior. For the Dutch design brand Artifort, he designed a series of iconic models in which organic shapes, new foam techniques, and fully upholstered constructions were central. The Big Tulip is one of the most characteristic examples. The chair owes its name to the shape of a blooming tulip: the soft, upward-curving arm and back parts seem to embrace the user. At a time when many chairs still had straight lines and visible constructions, this shape felt revolutionary. Thanks to the use of molded foam and elastic upholstery, a flowing, almost sculptural armchair was created in which comfort and form completely coincide. This offered example is an early model from Artifort's production period, recognizable by the original Artifort logo on the underside. The armchair has been fully restored and rebuilt with respect for the original design. It stands on the characteristic star base and has been reupholstered with the beautiful Beira upholstery fabric, which elegantly accentuates the soft lines of the design.
