Set of two relief ceramic panels forming a figurative composition. Chamotte clay, engobes in grey-green, beige, and brown tones, with sculpted reliefs before firing. The upper panel bears the incised mark “Cuixà” in the top right corner and is dated 1975, attesting to a direct link with the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa. The composition represents two stylised human figures, treated in a frontal and synthetic manner. The faces, hands, and hair are broken down into simple volumes, evoking the aesthetics of Romanesque sculpture, reinterpreted in a modern language. The work of the material — imprints, grooves, play of relief — gives the whole a strong tactile and spiritual presence. This work is attributed to the Catalan artist Paulí (Lluís Pérez Calvo), originally from Barcelona, active at the Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa in the 1970s. It is part of the modern sacred art movement of the post-war period, marked by the artistic renewal of monastic sites after the Second Vatican Council. The Abbey of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa was, in the 1960s and 1970s, an important centre of creation, hosting artists and craftsmen engaged in a synthesis between Romanesque tradition and formal modernity. A rare work, typical of the architectural ceramic production linked to Cuxa. The tiles are in excellent condition. Each measures 25 X 17.5 cm and weighs approximately 950g.
